What We Believe

DBCC stands in the line of historic Christianity, affirmed in The Apostles’ Creed:

We believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and Earth.

We believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended to the dead. On the third day, He rose again. He ascended into heaven. He is seated at the right hand of the Father, and He will come to judge the living and the dead.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, one holy Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.

DBCC members must affirm and believe these nine core, historic truths:

1. There is one triune God: There is only one true and living God who is the Creator of the universe: infinite, eternal, almighty, and perfect in holiness, truth, and love. He exists eternally in three Persons – the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

2. The Bible is God’s Word: The Bible is God’s written revelation of himself to mankind divinely given through human authors who were inspired by the Holy Spirit. It is entirely true, totally sufficient, and completely authoritative for matters of life and faith.

3. People are created in God’s image: human beings are created by God, male and female, to bear his image. They are the crowning work of His creation worthy of love, dignity, and respect regardless of matters like age, race, gender, or class.

4. People are in need of redemption: Because of the Fall, the image of God in people is distorted but not lost. All people have disobeyed God willfully through sin, thus inheriting both physical and spiritual death and the need for redemption. All human beings are born with a sin nature and into an environment inclined toward sin. Only by the grace of God through Jesus Christ can they experience salvation.

5. Jesus is both Lord and Christ: Jesus is both fully God and fully human. He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, died on the Cross as a substitute for mankind, was raised from the dead, ascended into heaven, and will one day return.

6. Jesus is the only way of salvation: Salvation comes only through Jesus Christ, the only mediator between God and man. No other religion, belief, or person can reconcile God and man. He alone can provide forgiveness and eternal salvation.

7. Salvation is by faith alone: Salvation comes only through a faith relationship with Jesus Christ, the Savior, as a person repents of sin and receives Christ’s forgiveness and eternal life. Salvation is instantaneous and accomplished solely by the power of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. This salvation is wholly of God by grace on the basis of Christ’s life, death and resurrection, not on the basis of human works. All the redeemed are secured in Christ forever.

8. The church is Christ’s body: The Holy Spirit immediately places all people who put their faith in Jesus Christ into one united spiritual body, the Church, of which Christ is the head.

9. Jesus Christ will return: God will bring the world to its appropriate end in His own time and in His own way. At that time, Jesus Christ will return personally and visibly in glory to the Earth. Christ will judge both the saved and unsaved. Those who have trusted Christ will receive a glorified body and dwell forever with the Lord. Those who have not trusted in Christ will spend eternity in hell, the place of everlasting punishment.

Six distinctives of our church:

I. Christian Living: We believe that God's justifying grace must not be separated from His sanctifying power and purpose. God commands us to love Him supremely and others sacrificially, and to live out our faith with care for one another, compassion toward the poor and justice for the oppressed. With God’s Word, the Spirit’s power, and fervent prayer in Christ’s name, we are to combat the spiritual forces of evil. In obedience to Christ’s commission, we are to make disciples among all people, always bearing witness to the gospel in word and deed.

II. Marriage: We believe God designed marriage as a unique relationship joining one man and one woman in a single, exclusive, life-long covenant which reflects the loving relationship between Christ and the church.  God intends sexual intimacy to only occur between a man and a woman joined in marriage.  Therefore, we believe all forms of sexual immorality are sinful and offensive to God.

III. Baptism & The Lord's Supper: We believe that after one is saved, our first step of obedience is the public declaration through baptism that we belong to Jesus.  Though baptism has no saving merit, it is how we identify ourselves with the death, burial and resurrection of Christ.  DBCC practices baptism by immersion.

We believe the observance of the Lord’s Supper to be the privilege of all born-again believers, and by the sacred use of bread and the fruit of the vine we are to commemorate the death of Christ.   This spiritual exercise of His saints is to be observed “till He comes” and should be preceded by solemn self-examination and confession of any known sin.

IV. Women in Ministry: Women play a significant, God-ordained role in establishing and leading the local church. Every leadership opportunity is open to women except those that are excluded by Scripture. The Scriptures clearly state that men are to serve in the office of Pastor and that women are not to serve in church positions in which they exercise authority over men or in which they teach doctrine to men (1 Timothy 2:12, 3:1-2; Titus 1:6-9). We do not see this as an issue of equality, for men and women are equal under God. The Bible is clear that men and women do not have the same roles.

V. Depedence on the Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit is to be respected, honored, and worshiped as God: the third person of the Trinity.  He convicts the world of sin, righteousness and judgment. Through the proclamation of the gospel He persuades men to repent of their sins and confess Jesus as Lord.  The Holy Spirit has come to glorify the Son who in turn came to glorify the Father. He will lead the Church into a right understanding and application of the truth of God’s Word.  We are not a charismatic church and do not practice tongues or other sign gifts in our meetings.  However we do believe God works miracles, the Christian life is supernatural, and the Holy Spirit empowers each believer for godly living and fruitful service.

VI. Love: We desire to live a life of love, knowing that the love we have for one another is a witness to all people that we belong to Jesus.  We want to live in genuine unity with our fellow believers so that a watching world will see and believe in Him.  We are serious about speaking the truth in love, putting away anger, using words that build others up, and forgiving one another as God has forgiven us.  This life of love is only possible by the power of God at work in us (Matthew 6:14; John 13:34-35, 17:21; Ephesians 1:19-20, 4:17-32).
